Courses - Math

Materials all math students will need to furnish: Notebook (3-ring binder-type), straight edge, graph paper, lined paper, pencil, and scientific calculator. Geometry students will also need a compass and protractor. Certain classes require a graphing calculator.

SPECIAL NOTE: Whenever schedule flexibility allows, a section will be scheduled for students who fail the first semester of a class in order to engage the students in a remediation and credit recovery opportunity as soon as possible. Therefore, students who fail the first semester may have a schedule change made to accommodate a repeat of the fall semester during the spring semester.

Teacher recommendation is suggested for correct math placement.

All students should expect daily homework and the need to invest time outside the classroom to be mathematically successful. Students will be expected to develop the ability to reason mathematically and apply learned concepts to new problem-solving situations.

PRE-ALGEBRA
Full Year
11
Pre-Algebra is designed to strengthen the student’s understanding of math fundamentals while introducing algebraic concepts relevant to standards The course concentrates on making math skills automatic through repetitive practice, integration, and manipulatives, and is intended as a bridge between arithmetic and algebra.

ALGEBRA I
Full Year
12
An introductory course in algebra emphasizing the nature and use of variables. This course guides the student in discovering mathematical principles and furnishes the student with a variety of math exercise material to strengthen these concepts.

GEOMETRY
Full Year
9   10   11   12
This course emphasizes geometric concepts and is designed to develop logical thinking and understanding of mathematical proofs. The student's knowledge of algebra will be reinforced. Prerequisite: Algebra I.

PRACTICAL MATH
Full Year
12
This is not a remedial math course. It is designed for the student who needs a third year of math but is not ready to go on to Geometry or Algebra II. It is intended to reinforce and expand the student's algebra and computational math skills while preparing them for the Nevada State Proficiency Test. The course will cover Algebra, Geometry, probability, and statistics topics. The math will be presented in terms of Consumer Math, measurement and conversions, graphs and charts, data organization and interpretation, and mathematical problems encountered in everyday life. Prerequisite: Algebra I.

ALGEBRA II
Full Year
12
A second course in algebra designed to extend the student's knowledge of basic algebra. Emphasis is placed on strengthening the student's problem solving techniques and preparation for further studies in mathematics. Prerequisites: Algebra I and Geometry.

ALGEBRA III
Semester/Full Year
12
This course is designed for the student who has completed Algebra II but is not ready for trigonometry. This course will build confidence in algebraic skills while reviewing and expanding on topics involved in Algebra II. It is intended to help the student be more successful on college entrance tests. A graphing calculator is recommended. Prerequisite: Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II.

TRIGONOMETRY/ PRE-CALCULUS
Full Year
12
Trigonometry- The aim of this section of the course is to enable the student to grasp trigonometric principles and to be able to apply them in various fields of mathematics and science.
Pre-Calculus - This course is designed to help students develop a strong foundation of mathematical concepts using algebra and technology as tools for solving real-life problems. Prerequisites: Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II.

CALCULUS
Full Year
12
An introductory course in calculus and analytic geometry for those students who have completed math courses up through trigonometry. Emphasis is on using technology as well as traditional methods of problem solving. Students may gain college credit by passing the advanced placement examination. Prerequisites: Trigonometry.
